Lotería Caller Guide (Cantor)
The caller sets the pace and the vibe. Use this guide to keep the game fair, fast, and fun.
1) Before you start (set expectations)
- Choose the winning pattern before the first card is called (line, corners, diagonal, full card, etc.).
- Explain verification: players should keep markers in place until you confirm the win.
- Decide pacing: slower at the start for new players; faster after a few rounds.
2) How to call cards (simple and consistent)
Draw one card at a time, announce it clearly, and give players a beat to mark their tablas. Traditional callers sometimes add a short verse or hint before saying the name—this is optional, but it makes the game memorable.
- Say it twice (especially for kids or larger groups).
- Keep a discard pile face-up so you can verify wins.
- Don’t “help” players by pointing—keep it fair.
3) Win verification (fast and fair)
- Pause the game immediately when someone calls “¡Lotería!”
- Ask them to point to the marked pattern on their tabla.
- Check the discard pile (or your called list) for each required card.
- If valid: confirm the win and reset for the next round.
- If not valid: resume the game and keep calling (no shame—happens all the time).
4) Helpful supplies for callers
- Traditional deck: Lotería deck
- Card stand (optional): Card holder/stand
- Small bell (for wins): Hand bell
- Markers: Bingo chips/tokens
5) Quick scripts you can use
Start: “We’re playing for (pattern). Ready? ¡Vamos!”
Pace reminder: “If you need a second, raise your hand—I'll slow down.”
Win check: “Show me your pattern and we’ll verify the cards.”
